Has anyone read the novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan?

In both Memoirs of a Geisha and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, cultural perceptions of beauty and desirability are explored. Consider the significance of beauty rituals in Japanese geisha culture and the Chinese practice of foot binding. My question is How does a culture decide on what's beautiful? Consider environmental factors, family culture, and mass media exposure to model-types as possibilities.
