Asians Obsessed with Being SKINNY, WHITE n BlOND?

Okay now that I have your attention, a situation has been revealed to me that has been very saddening. I have a friend who is Chinese and she is VERY pale. Someone once suggested she should tan for her prom dress (I disagreed) However she replied, "really, I thought I was too dark, when I go to China everyone tells me it's too bad I am not as pale as my sister" Second friend who is Caucasian went to panama with a Chinese family, she is a little chubby, ALL the Chinese there rudely told her she was FAT. Later she was asked to visit China with this family and she said NOOO WAYY not until I am 98 lbs. YOU KNOW WHAT THEY TOLD HER?? "Don't worry about it, your blond hair will make up for the fact your fat. Chinese people are obsessed with blond hair" After researching I realized, Many (not all) but many Asians find beauty in being very pale, SKINNY, and having lighter hair. I was on a fashion blog centered in Tokoyo and EVERY model WAS PALE, SKINNY, and had DIED hair. Why is this? Please don't say this is not true, because it IS. I have spoken to many Japanese and Chinese friends, and they all told me they have to loose a few lbs before they go to Asia. The sad thing is they are no where near being fat! So tell me, what you think about this. Did you know about this situation? If your Asian has this preference affected you? Also, I am not trying to offend anyone, I just find this appalling. Also I know lighter skin is preferred in many countries like India and sometimes the U.S. However mostly in the U.S and European countries being TAN is whats considered beautiful. It just seems in Asia there is low tolerance for fat, dark people and they are considered "less of"

  1. I'm not reading all that what do i look like to you a college student
  2. This is such an awkward scenario.
  3. It's not just Asians, a lot of girls are fixated on being skinny and blond (not sure about pale). Most models are skinny and pale, like Karlie Kloss for example, or Ali Stephens.
  4. I know about it because I'm half chinese so I've gotten a lot crap because of my skin tone. It basically an intergenerational thing. It started with Asian royalty, they were able to stay in the house mostly all day so they had paler skin so pale skin is associated with wealth. Most people who worked in fields or the working class had darker skin. Here in America, tan skin is associated with wealth because people with money are able to vacation frequently and therefore gain a sun tan. It's a complicated issue that affects many cultures, but it is the standard of beauty in those countries.
  5. i know that being pale is huge over there because you were considered poor and not as fortunate if you were tanned, because it generally meant that you were working the fields all day. as with being skinny, i think all cultures are obsessed with being skinny. blonde hair? i know when i went to singapore, my mother was really scared ( i was like, 4) because all these asians in public were coming up to me and touching my hair....so scary! But i got a ton of free silk scarves out of being blonde ;) i think its the fact that naturally, you don't get blonde asians. With caucasians, you can get all sorts of hair, but with asians, its just black and straight (sometimes curly). The appeal to the exotic perhaps??
  6. That's like me asking why are black women obsessed with blonde weaves, relaxed hair and being overweight.
  7. becuz of stupid western media and their stupid stereotyping can actually influence real life people and also chinese have an obsession of being thin and light before the white (pink) people came heck chinese people are lighter and have clearer skin than white becuz white tend to have freckles and hair srry and tan being your a lower class and a farmer becuz rich people back then dont work in the middle kingdom
  8. someone wake me when this rant is over....
  9. Yes it's true. I'm Korean and my sister has bleached blond hair, is thin and wears blue contacts. It used to hurt me a little when out in public nobody thought we were from the same family because far away she can pass for white. And I notice whites are bit friendlier towards her becuz she is pale and blond. We grew up in a mostly white neighborhood and were bullied by blond white kids - and many Asians get picked on by whites. So the girls try to get acceptance from whites by looking less "ethnic" or Asian. We also prefer to date white guys too - becuz then we ill be more socially accepted by society. We make our eyes bigger and noses sharper with plastic surgery. Some wear colored contacts and color our hair so we look less "oriental" . Whites or other races can be pretty mean to Asians sometimes. We do this for social acceptance.
  10. I know what you mean. I know a chinese girl who was adopted by white people. All though she is a very pretty girl she hates being asian. She bleaches her hair blonde, wears contacts, and wears a TON of eyeliner to distort her eyes to make them more caucasian. its really sad. As for being slim, well, every country is obsessed with being skinny. Except africa, because in africa being fat means you have money for extra food. (at least that's what ive heard)
  11. Ok, thats kind of wierd for me. All the Asians I met are nice and not one of them raisist. Most of them said they liked tan skin( and it was true, because they went and got tan) or dark hair. I guess sometimes people try to fit in, which is sad. You are who you are and it shoulden't matter if the society doesn't fully acept you because of your race. I don't know, but I guess they want to be white, because its different to them. A lot of people act white even though there not.
