So, I'm going to Korea in 2 weeks.. I wonder how they Treat blacks/Hispanics.?
Okay, So I'm a hybrid mixed of Dominican and Jamaican..But I Guess you can say I look Black.. Because that what most people say anyway until I speak Spanish or tell them. Although Plenty of Spanish people for some reason can tell.. Just very few guess Dominican I usually get Honduran or Panamanian.. ANYWAY.. Me and 4 other friends Including 1 Being Japanese, and 1 Being Black, 1 Being a RED head with freckles and Blue eyes, and I always get Looked at because I have green eyes and Brown skin so its always like "WHOA , are those contacts?" ... and another Black Gay gay guy.. although we don't know much about him and he's working in another department but if he never told us that he was gay we would never know..... anyway.. Were moving Slap dead in the middle of Seoul which is a VERY VERY VERY beautiful city and I can't wait to get there I have to say when I arrive I will be like a little kid in a candy store... All 4 of us, Will be Teaching English.. we are all very fluent in Korean ( I studied for 5 years) We all know how to write Translate and all that In Korean, I personally would Like to know how we would get treated.. No I'm not light skinned black, if you look at me I look only black with green eyes lol I'm not very tall only 5 ft 5 or 6, and Average body. I Hear if your tall and slim.. You'll Get asked if your a model a lot and they will be fascinated by you...lol... I was also told that my friend and I might be the only black people at the school. (teaching at at least, but I doubt that there are any black students) Would I be able to date In Korea? How would I be treated? Do Korean Girls/Guys like Black guys? or as they told us Some of the students might be a little afraid of me.. lol .. I'm just really Curious. How do they treat red heads? like real orange hair.. would she get stares? do Korean guys like Black girls?. I imagine Seoul is very Diverse and such and I understand that most of these answers you can't speak for all Koreans in Seoul but Just an Idea Is nice =] ..PS. we also know the food culture all that good stuff.. lol and where from New york city.. If that plays a role.. - The more Koreans that Answer the better.. lol

- sup well korean pple r very very conservative but i guess they do like foreigners i mean if they loook anyone from x or y country they will definitely look at them like if they were aliens (in a positive way) na~~~ u will do fine! take it easy man there are soooo many foreign pple here in korea and they do gain a lot! a lot of money hahaa caus they teach english of courc!! english language is like the big thing so dnt worrry and bout being "black" mmmm not a good influenc i guess not offendin u OF COURSE... i havnt seen many black pple jst pure american like the gold hair and blue or green eyes hahahahaha good luck buddy! haha
- probably a lot of black servicemen there, I'm sure they must have bedded a few korean girls now and again
- im filipino american and have taught in korea 3 years. during that time, ive been mistaken mostly for mexican and sometimes black. ive said in previous answers of similar questions about treatment of darker skinned foreigners in korea, when i would get heckled by a local douchebag the derogatory statement had a bit more venom (half-breed, tree climber) than my white friends (big nose, devil eyes). but all in all, we're all foreigners...but there is a pecking order. people (ur students, random locals etc) will comment on ur appearance. sometimes its not meant to be derogatory ('wow, ur fat') but many people are pretty frank about what they say and sometimes its out of concern ('ur eyes are red...u look tired?'). ive had people say i looked like martin lawrence and once a girl told me that i looked like that 'basketball player!' lol some of my students even called me obama teacher. if u have some insecurities about urself physically, most likely it'll be brought out at least once during ur stay. but ur time there will give u a thicker skin towards that. and as far as some of the locals go, b/c u are a foreigner sometimes u will get treated as a commodity b/c u speak english instead of a person. ive met quite a few nice people there...but genuine ones split that in about 1/2. most of my time in korea, i worked in a small city (around 300k) in the jeollanam-do province....so its a bit different from seoul area. definetely less stares in the larger cities. but everything really is what u make of it.
- Hmm.. I believe if you are a foreign, and as long as you are a foreign, who looks different from the rest then you will be treated differently here and there. ;-) These Koreans are different from the Korean Americans. I think.... Where Korean Americans are more adapted to the American lifestyle and the people surrounding them. But, in Korea, they are surrounded by koreans so everyone in the most part is still very conservative. Not that Korean Americans are not conservatives at all, that's not what I am saying. Some or maybe majority are still like that. Hope you will have fun staying there. ;-) But, on the other hand, It would be kind of hard to get into a relationship because you're a foreign and are different from them.
